Interview

with Liz Lulabelle

The Lulabells are an all girl four piece band from Rotterdam, The Netherlands that have been together (this line-up) since December 2000. Their sound reminds me of a Screeching Weasel, Bikini Kill, The Eyeliners mix. So, its up beat with good harmonies that will make your head bob to the beat. Their latest release is a 7” inch entitled “Beyond punk rock and bowling shoes”. It was released on Thunderbaby Records out of Germany. This interview was done over the Internet!

Matt: How long have you been a band (The current line-up)?

Liz: This Lulabelles line-up has been playing together since December 2000. Before that we've been together with other members for a year and learned to play and make our own songs as the Spoilers. But there are
already like 5 bands with the same name, so after line-up change # 3 we changed it to the Lulabelles and
made a new start!

Matt: What is your name, and what do you play?

Liz: My name is Liz and I'm the bass player

Matt: Why did you pick that instrument?

Liz: Well, our bass player left and I had a bass at home, not that I could play...So I switched from singing to becoming the bassist. Now I don't sing anymore. Some
back-ups on the 7".

Matt: How do you feel towards other all girl bands like yourselves (Like the Eyeliners, the Donnas)?

Liz: I hate their guts!!!!
No, not at all, there are some really good bands
around and some just have good management...
We just started doing this, not out of some feministic
point of view. And that counts for most girl bands we
meet/know. We just wanna have fun and do our thing. If
I had been a guy I'd probably done the same thing.
So far we've done a mini tour with Sit 'n Spin, who
are really cool girls who know how to play cool tunes.
And we just came back from a mini tour through France
with the Twiggy Killers who know how to rock and party!

Matt: What inspires you musical?

Liz: We used to like a lot of bands from Lookout!, but as that label is slowly dieing... Screeching Weasel is
still one of my all-time favorite bands.
We listen to all sorts of stuff. I mostly listen to
hardcore and rockabilly/rock 'n roll.
We decided to make punk rock and you can hear we know
stuff like the Queers, Ramones, fifties tunes, raw
garage music. And the lyrics... well, basically about
the ups and downs in the love section, what half the
world is singing about.

Matt: What do you do outside of the band (Work, go to
school, ect.)?

Liz: I have to graduate college this year. The English
translation of my study is 'Leisure-studies', but that
doesn't explain at all what it is about. And I work in
a clothes and shoe shop for the extra money. I do not
intent to sell Dr Martens boots as a fulltime job!
Ann is a schoolteacher for 6- 12-year-old kids. Joke
is a mum and has a part-time job as a secretary at a
lawyer’s office. Mary-Anne is taking a break from
everything at the moment. And we hang out, go to bars
and dancing, and go see shows together.

Matt: Is your band planning on touring America?

Liz: Wanting something and doing it are two different
things. An American tour would be cool, but is still
so far away for us. We just got started, no one knows
us, we hardly have the money to record new stuff, which
is our first new concern. But dreaming is free! And
touring Europe is a whole lot different than touring
America, I think I prefer Europe, because I hear
American bands always telling us that you get treated
like shit sometimes in the States. If someone begs to
differ, let me know, 'cuz I would love to go
someday!!!

Matt: If so, when and where?

Liz: Well, we all loooove the sun...So, we do sunny states first, hahaha! No, just like any European tourist I'd like to see places like San Francisco, L.A., New York, Chicago, for the sights and music scene, etc. I think if we have the opportunity to go, we are happy with almost any town.

Matt: What do you feel about America in general (the
bands, the image, the crisis of September 11)?

Liz: It's the land where they say you can do anything;
you are just not allowed to do most of it, haha!
A lot of people look up to America like some kind of
Mecca. Most of the music I listen to comes from the
States, the clothes I like come from the States. When
it comes down to material stuff, America is my Mecca.
But if I compare the U.S. to my country when it comes
down to law and social stuff, I'm soooo happy to be
Dutch! Let's not talk about the image, because our
TV-stations are full of American crap like 'Married
with children', 'Jerry Springer', hahaha! But thank
you for 'Sex and the city'.... What happened in September is absolute crazy of course! Even though I think in general it was a genius plan, it gave a huge dent in America's pride, but it takes a mindless and heartless person to carry it out. Because of one man and his holy war, we are all in state of war, and no one wants it.

Matt: How many releases does your band have out?

Liz: We have our own 7" 'Beyond punk rock and
bowling shoes' out on Thunderbaby Records in Germany.
We have a song on the Suckerpunch compilation cd here
in the States. Also one song on the 'European pop punk
virus' CD from Stardumb records here in Holland. There
are some more releases on compilation CD's coming up.
Hoping to record our new songs in the New Year. Maybe
do a split 7" too.  All we need is another cool
band...

Matt: What 5 CD’s are you listening to right now?

Liz: In my CD player now I have:
American Nightmare: Background music.
Manges: Manges 'r good enough.
Peawees: Dead end city.
Grouvie Ghoulies: Fun in the dark.
And Sri: Union square

Matt: What is coming up in the future of the Lulabelles?

Liz: Hmm... I do not have my glass ball with me... But we play every weekend, we are looking if can play in
countries like Italy, Spain and maybe England net
year. Like I said before, we hope to record new stuff,
really looking forward to that!!! Extend the
merchandise with new t-shirts.
